Rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15a)

The Mass Returned

In 2022, I had a 16cm mass in my left thigh. It required two surgeries- one to biopsy it and another to remove it. The surgeon’s office expected the results in 2 weeks, but had never had it go beyond 4. Mayo Clinic took the full 6 weeks they had and kept it for teaching purposes.

It turned out to be a spindle cell lipoma. 91% of these are in males- in their shoulders and upper back.

It was strange to say the least.

The nurse practitioner told me that it isn’t cancer, but it’s like cancer in the way that it can come back. At first, she thought I’d need to come back for CTs every 3 months to check for regrowth. But the surgeon, who had only seen one like it in his entire career, said to just come back if something changes.

I thought- “I hadn’t noticed the 16 cm mass beneath all my muscle. How would I notice if it comes back?”

This summer after ACL surgery on that leg, I noticed I was markedly asymmetrical, so I went in on July 29 for medical imaging. It showed a 5.9 x 5.1 x 2.5 cm mass had returned in the same thigh.

Friends Interceded

I have some friends who pray expecting God to be who He is. They listen for His heart and confidently intercede for that.

¹⁴ And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. ¹⁵ And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. 1 John 5:14-15

Unbeknownst to me, God had given one of my friends a mental picture of two tumors. He indicated to her that His heart was healing for them. She interceded with His heart. Romans 8:26-27 says the Spirit intercedes for us & Hebrews 7:24-25 says Jesus intercedes for us. She was joining with Him for His heart over me.

The Mass Disappeared

The surgeon ordered more imaging one week later on August 5. This imaging showed some things I wasn’t aware of that were important to know. The best part was, there was no mass.

But he wasn’t so sure. He sent a letter to my primary care physician to say that the imaging done just one week apart were markedly incongruent. Then he ordered more imaging to see if he had missed it.

He hadn’t. It just wasn’t there anymore.

Most Significant Healing Yet

This Monday I got the call that Tuesday’s surgery was off! There’s no need to cut me open if there’s nothing there. I could go with my son to his first day of school and be at our co-ops orientation.

I was talking to God about it, wondering if the first imaging had been wrong or if He had healed me.

He impressed on my heart His joy and the reality that this was the most significant healing He had done for me.

The most significant? He healed my brain injury! The one my neurologist said that I’d just have to live with the limitations and results of after that much time. He healed my teeth. Big things in my book. Significant things.

In His book, though, this was the most significant for me yet.

I wondered about that. How was it the most significant? Does that mean that maybe it won’t come back again in the future?

Then I heard from my friend who had been praying for me. She feels that that is what the 2 tumors represented- one for the present mass and the other for the future.

I am grateful. My heart is rejoicing in what God has done.
