Living in a Cave with Billions To Your Name

Imagine you inherited billions of dollars, but were continuing your life scavenging junk and living in a cave with your brother. This was true of Zsolt and Geza Peladi of Hungary. They knew their mother had come from a wealthy family, but she had severed ties with them before abandoning her two sons and subsequently passing. When their wealthy grandmother in Germany passed away, they and a sister were in direct line to divide up her 6.6 billion dollars.

Lawyers found the lineage and employed charity workers to find the two brothers. Could you imagine being the two brothers when they found out? Maybe it was just another day of scavenging junk and selling it, coming back to your cave to sleep, and then you discover you’d been living this life all the while you had billions of dollars to your name?!!

Living in Poverty with Infinite Riches To Your Name

Isn’t that just like us?

We have an incomprehensibly great inheritance in God’s family. Through Christ, we have untold riches. Available to us now.

These kind of riches aren’t silver or gold or billions of dollars. No. They are far more valuable. And they will not be fully realized until heaven. Yet God longs for us to fully realize and take possession of what is rightly ours- now. Check out Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:15-23 (emphasis mine):

¹⁵ For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love^[f] toward all the saints, ¹⁶ I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, ¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, ¹⁸ having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, ¹⁹ and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might ²⁰ that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, ²¹ far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. ²² And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, ²³ which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

We have untold riches. Available to us now:

• The Holy Spirit
• The knowledge of God
• The hope to which He has called us
• The riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints
• His immeasurably great power (the same power that raised Christ from the dead)

Yet, like the Peladi brothers, we are living in poverty- spiritual poverty. We would do well to think long and deeply about these realities.

• How many of us are struggling under the weight of a sin that His immeasurably great power is at our fingertips to free us from?
• How many of us have our minds set on the last thing we scrolled on social media or the next task we have to accomplish, and we can’t see past them to the incredible reality that we can use our minds to develop our knowledge of God?
• How many of us are trudging along under a cloud of depression when God longs to reveal to us the hope to which He has called us and the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints?

My guess is every last one of us to some degree. May God help us all to make it our priority to claim the inheritance that is ours- now and for eternity.

There are bigger, better, everlasting goals for each of us to be striving toward- and all we need to live our best life is to grow in our knowledge of the One who drafted them, increase our trust in Him and His plan, and begin to take possession of our inheritance so we can run toward them unencumbered.
